okay, so with wilsons in lexington closed, those of us in the bible belt need more resources. i'm told there is a decent vedub salvage yard called alvins salvage in okemah, oklahoma.....can anyone validate this claim? i'm looking for project cars and want to search a salvage yard....i would like to know of other salvage yards within 100 miles of oklahoma city also....

Alan Willis Thu Jan 13, 2005 1:08 pm

what happened to all the cars at wilsons?i remember he had a few splits and ovals!

undwirtanzten Thu Jan 13, 2005 1:14 pm

from what i have gathered, what didn't sell was sold to the crushers....but a lot of people rescued cars from the crusher when they found out wilson had died and they were closing. my made in germany 69 came from wilsons, and the guy i bought it from also has a 70 super that i intend on purchasing that came from wilsons...both bugs are fully functional.

any word on all those splits and ovals!I wanted to fly out and buy some, but was stuck in sandy eggo!I do know those cars were being sold for bluebook,under$500!ANd it would be a shame if all those cars were indeed crushed!I remember he even had a row of splitty 3folds

I've heard about the Okemah place too...my husband and I want to drive down and check it out. Maybe this weekend...

I've also heard there's one near Bristow.

I'll do some checking and let you know what I find out.

and let's not forget the assortment of ghia's that i'm told were there...i got into vedubs after wilsons had already closed when i was told my bug came from a salvage yard in lexington....one of the biggest in the us i was told.....but i am constantly reminded of the ghia's when i go to check on the 70 super's progress (the guy that is selling it wants to rebuild it before he sells it and i help with the occasional hard to find part....my dad is an air cooled mechanic and has been doing it for 40 years so parts aren't a problem for me...he has no idea that i'm planning on buying it the day he's done with it.)

There is a guy in Oakhurst (between Sapulpa and Tulsa) that has quite a few vdubs in his yard. He isn't real organized about what he has, but he does get back to you. I have only picked up a few small parts, but I am in the process of finishing my '70 bug and am getting a '66. Here is the address and phone number:

S&S Foreign Cars

The last oval at Wilson's.

Cutting the oval.

The last of the oval, along with the rest of my stash. It is in my room now. ;)

Hey Gpride. Ever go to Rose Hill/Derby area? I know of a place there that has a lot of vw's in slavage.

Check here. http://oklahomavwcruisers.tk/

I belong to this club. There is a bunch of people that may be able to help out. Some have been in the scene for years around here. They have lots of contacts. There are a couple places around here that have a few parts/cars left. Good luck.

i'll be sure to check this site in further detail tomorrow....it's been a rough nite....i had to walk home from work because my gas line is frozen....again....and once again, i wasn't adequately bundled.

that's enough of that....tomorrow i am winterizing my gas tank/line. i've been putting it off because of all the 60-70 degree weather we've had, but enough is enough. i had to walk home on xmas eve too....talk about being mad at the world....not a single person offered a ride....on xmas eve.....

I live east of Tulsa and have been to a small VW salvage yard called Admiral Auto Salvage just south of Catoosa off of hwy 412. The parts are pretty picked over but he has new stuff coming all the time.
I'd like to know about the one's in Okemah and Bristow when the info becomes avail. Thanks!

Ok...I just got off the phone with my neighbor who grew up in the Okemah area. The VW salvage that is north of Okemah and south of Bristow are one and the same.

From Bristow, go south on 48 to a small country town called Ixl. The VW place should be on your right. If you come to a small town called Castle, you've gone too far. (There is a little store that may or may not be open any more called the Castle store. You've gone to far is you come to the intersection with that old store.)

Coming from I-40...take the 48 exit toward Bristow...you will pass the Castle store intersection and proceed up toward the town of Ixl. That's where the salvage is, on your left.

I may have gotten the left and right info confused...anyway, she says it's a big place and you can't miss it.

Let me know if this works out...she said as far as she knew it was still in business. Also, I spoke with a complete stranger in the AutoZone here in Tulsa and he mentioned it too. My neighbor said it was north of Okemah, the stranger said it was south of Bristow. Gotta be the same place.

Here is a MAP...the salvage is between Bristow and Castle in the Ixl area and if you zoom in you can even see the small town of Ixl noted on the map.

Can it be "Allen's Salvage"? The guy that owns the one I'm talking about above is named Nick Allen, he's a friend of my neighbors.

I'll bet that's who it is, huh?

I'm not too familiar with OK, but while i was out there for a few months i went by Allens, it's on HWY 48 in castle. You can actually pull up the address and phone# on AOL yellow pages. You really can't miss it there are quite a few bugs along the road. Some pretty nice project cars

More Info!!

I just called Allen's Salvage at 1-918-623-1346 and spoke with them. They are 17 miles directly south of Bristow on 48. They are on the west side of the road, near a white water tower. They have several VW vans and a few Karmann Ghias. He said the Ghias are mostly picked over. He said he has "a couple hundred" Beetles, some might be good project cars but most are just parts cars.

Hope this is helpful information!

Yep, that's the impression I got when I spoke to him. He answered my questions concerning the buses and the Ghias, even said he had some Rabbits, but he was most enthusiastic about his Beetles.
