HEY WHATS UP EVERY ONE , NEW TO THIS SITE AS WELL AS TO TYPE 4'S.
JUST BOUGHT A 71 TYPE 4 WAGON THATS A LITTLE ROUGH. THE GUY I BOUGHT IT FROM SAID THAT THE MOTOR DOES RUN BUT HAS TO SPRAY FUEL IN IT TO KEEP IT RUNNING. A FRIEND OF MINE SAYS HE HAS A CORVIAR ENGINE WITH A ADAPTER THAT WILL FIT. ANY BODY EVER HEARD OF THIS OR SHOULD I STICK WITH KEEPING IT ALL ORIGINAL WITH THE FUEL INJECTION?

Hmm...the Corvair engine used to be a more common VW swap when Corvair motors were more common... You have to have the kit to make the Corvair motor spin backwards besides the adapter, though. I guess it depends on which version of the corvair motor he has and what condition it is in. I wouldn't bother myself unless it was the 180hp turbo version. :D Anyway, the type 4 motor can be built to have good horsepower, as can the Corvair motor. I guess it all depends on your skill, time, budget, and dedication to originality. You probably are going to have your work cut out for you anyway without a swap if you want to fix the car up nicely. If properly maintained and setup, I've heard the D-Jet injection runs excellently. Another good website for these cars is shoptalkforums.com. There is a fuel injection forum there that can help you diagnose the running problems, as well as a 411/412 forum where you can find wisdom dispensed by 411/412 guru Ray Greenwood. There's also an engine conversions forum as well as the type4rum, all about the type 4 motor.

THANKS FOR THE 411, THE CORVIAR ENGINE IS SUPPOSE TO BE REBUILT, BUT I GUESS I'LL JUST JUMP IN A GET MY FEET WET AND TAKE IT FROM THERE. THANKS AGAIN I'LL TRY TO TO KEEP YOU GUYS INFORMED ON THE PROGRESS .

Hey, if you want to put the 'vair motor in don't let me stop you. I'm actually a fan of cool engine swaps. Just make sure the power increase is worth the work is all I say... 8)

Really think out the conversion. How are you going to duct cool air to the engine cooling fan? Is the extra length of the additional 2 cylinders going to interfer with the body? Will the engine height interfer with the deck cover? How are you going to support the extra weight? These are a start in doing a conversion.

As for me, I'd rather just tune the Type 4 for more power. Things like big bore pistons, stroker cranks, Weber carbs, high flowing exhaust systems are all available for the Type 4. These motors are very reliable; and they can maintain that reliability in high performance config if built properly.

I need to get my 412 engine rebuilt. Someone told me they could replace my 412 engine and A/T with a type 1 engine and Man Trans.
Has anyone heard of doing such a thing? Is it common?

My first reaction is that it sounds like alot of work for going down in HP so I'm not convinced.

Don't bother with the Type 1 engine and trans. It would be a lot of work to do, be less reliable, and would devalue the car. Rebuild the engine; it's not that difficult. Make sure you learn about the engine, and use reputable machine shops that do Type 4s regularly.

Yeah, I would swap in a used Type 4 if you are in a pinch. I doubt you would be happy with a Type I motor even if you could manage to put it in there somehow.
