View original topic: Running a VW motor out of the car

Hi,
I have a VW motor for my 68 type 1 that I would li,ke to test before putting it in the car. I know 12v needs to go to the coil,(terminal 15?), what other electrical connections do I have to make? I figured 12v to the starter also.
Thanks.

12v positive to the starter, 12v negative to ground, 12v positive to the coil terminal 15. You also need a supply of fuel.

Jump the starter solinoid and your running.

Thanks for the help. I wish I had the forethought to cut the starter mount out of my old tranny before I threw it away. I do have a semiauto tranny sitting around. ???? I'm very hesitant to cut it up as it is complete with all the servos, switches and lines with only 65k original miles on it.
Thanks again

You can bolt the complete tranny up. The cut down one just makes storage easier.

Is it possible to run an engine that way on an Autostick without fluid to the torque converter? I was thinking about running my engine while on the frame but then I remembered that the fluid resevoir to the tranny is under the fender so would it kill the tranny to run the engine with the torque converter dry?

Guys,
Depends on what you want really. The bellhousing is detachable from the main case on a s-a. You don't have to run the torque converter on the engine, but if you remove it, you're up for a new seal. You'd have to fab up a holding fixture/plate for the bellhousing. As to the s-a oil pump, you could rig up a straight feed/return if you want don't want to run your pump dry.

Personally, I'd have Glenn's set up. Find an exploded 12 Volt manual case, do a cut 'n' shut and leave your s-a spares alone. You can use your s-a starter on a manual case.

Enjoy

TSPOT100,

EnergyOne produces a bracket for the back of the the VW engine which attaches to the engine and holds the starter. The unit without the push button starter is about $54.00 and with it is about $68.00. It bolts up and works fine. You can find it at this web site:

You can get a blown tranny for nothing. Then it's just the cost of a cut off wheel or a sawzall blade.

Is there a seal between the bell housing and the engine on an AS? I dont remember scraping anything off either side plus there are open holes along the bell housing to reach the toque converter bolts. If so, where do I get a replacement?
