View original topic: 6 rib side shift

OK ... here's my long story short. I have a 4 seater woods buggy. I recently busted the type 1 (?) tranny. I bought a 6 rib side shift out of a 1980 Vanagon. Now... can I hook this side shift up to my 1835??? I realize I'm going to have to change the old swing arm to IRS but that's ok, I don't mind the work or the time it will take. I'll have to do that regardless if I go to a 3 - 5 - or 6 rib. Is there some kind of adapter for the offset of the side shift or do you just make do with it? I'm new to working on VW's but I'm gonna learn. I don't have much of a choice! Thanks for anyones help in advance. I'm gonna read every post and go from there.

There is a tranny company that I cant remember for the life of me that suggests using these trannies for the 1/2 1600 cars due to something stronger in the internals.

That same company makes a cable shifter for those trannies. Weddle comes to mind but I'm most likely way off.

Did a little more digging on this and I guess it was Rancho but I dont remember it being them.

Thanks for the info on the conversion kit. I went to the site and checked it out and I'll give them a call during business hours. I'm needing it for the 091 ... maybe it's interchangable?? The cost of the cable shift for the 094 looks to be about 2x what I bought the 091 for!! lol !!

runslikeapenguin Thu Jun 11, 2009 6:23 pm

its the 091-1. its basically the same as the normal 091 but it has a huge reverse gear that's pretty much indestructible.

bhallmsfd Thu Jun 11, 2009 6:40 pm

Will my 1835cc turn the 091?? Does anyone know the gear ratio??

Cable shift http://www.cableshift.com/home.html

Good info here http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=143138

Thanks Aquamanx ... I'm going to get in touch with cableshift.com tomorrow and see about pricing. It looks like that's the only way to do it. No way to offset the linkage without using cables I don't guess... not that I can find anyway. Awesome rides you have there by the way!!!

Thanks,
I guess there are a couple different ways it can be done cable looks like the best.
I think Drews sells one like this http://www.go-drews.com/index.htm I didn't see it on there site you will have to call them.

Yea your 1835 will do well with that trans, I run a 3 rib with an 1835 and 34 inch super swamper tires. does fine, 3 rib has a 5.38 ratio diff where the car trans were in the 3's so you'll have alot lower geared trans now.

Not quite. He said it was from a 1980 Vanagon.

1983.5+ is the mid shift that is an 091-1, which has the beefy reverse gear. It came with the water cooled engines. I bought one of these from the junkyard, but now have no use for it. Don at Don's Bus Box says almost everything is different about the 091-1.

The 1980-1983 trannys that were behind air cooled engines are the side shift 091 that can be converted to nose shift. This conversion may be cheaper than the cable shifter or that other shifter, but I'm not sure. You may be able to use shifter parts from the Vanagon.

That is a picture of the shifter I sell.
That is a customer of mines buggy in the picture.
A shop north of here makes them.
Brian has sold that shifter at times too.

It is for a water cooled Vanagon transmission.
Those came in 84-91 Vanagons.

Here is a shot looking from the front after the install was finished.

As mentioned the air cooled Vanagon has the same reverse gears as a normal end shift 091 6 rib.
No advantage there.

The water cooled has a huge reverse gear and more than one R&P ratio available.

I use the one made by cable shift in my 1-1600 offroad race car. it works great and i have had no problems. the one by rancho we installed in a customers pre-runner and the bracket that the cables hooked to bent. but that could have been the driver. i like the cable shift one because of the added mounts at the gear carrier.

Hey Gary!!
That set up looks awesome!! and you sell that?? I'm still gonna price the cable shift. Got home too late today to call. I'd like to call you back and price your set up too.
Thanks guys for all the input....
I really appreciate it!!!!

Only if you don't want to use the 091/Vanagon starter.
Change the bellhousing and you have to shorten/change the input shaft.

seabeebuggy Sat Jun 13, 2009 5:34 pm

Yaa that's right. Thanks.

The bell on my 091/1 has a hydraulic slave on it. A plus if you are already set up for a hydraulic clutch.

mine has a hydrolic slave for clutch too. how significant is the boot condition on the clutch? My boot is busted.
