heres what i have going, 1974, 1800cc, weber 40's, type 4 engine, empi 2 tip exhaust. I originally got my weber 40's installed about 3 months ago. when the mechanics installed them they pinched off the tube running out of the EGR valve, so i have an EGR valve comin out of my heat exchangers leading to nothing. theres severe decay and holes everywhere on the EGR valve. My heat exchangers spout out hot air from places they shouldnt. Basically when i am coming to a stop, using no gas, i get this popity, crackle, pop pop noise. and when i am idle, the right tip on my exhaust pops like 15-20 times a minute at random. the exhaust is brand new, i just put it on.
IS it the EGR valve thats causing this, or it it the heat exchangers. is it both? or could it be something completely different? |

i believe i have heard an exaust leak can cause a popping noise. also have heard that an intake leak can cause a different kind of popping noise. i have never actuallly heard the popping with my own ears though, so.....
good luck

I had a similar problem when I rebuilt my 2L. I am not sure on a 1800, but on my 2L the exaust was leaking where it came out of the head. I pulled it apart and used a little exaust past on the head tube. I also filed the ends so that they were parallel and flat. There was also a leak from the head tube to U shaped tube on the way to the heater boxes. I used Nissian pick-up gaskets (because they were slightly thicker and a better fit than what I had ordered!) and a little exaust paste. Viola!...the popping stopped. It was very bad when I would coast down a canyon in low gear. I hope this helps! |
