Hi,
What demand would there be for a type 4 Bus exhaust system for the 1700/1800 and 2ltrs built from Stainless steel ??? .It would be built to exactly the same style as the original and still be able to use the heat exchangers. All i have seen advertised is the loud , go faster twin tip efforts that do away with the heat exchangers .
I have contacted a UK specialist Stainless steel exhaust fabricators who build one off systems and they are prepared to build a batch at a reduced price for a bulk order of 5 or over .Price would be approx £325 which i know is a lot of money but the Ernst mild steel systems are £85, have limited life and once rusted ruins the Buses appearance somewhat .
Would really appreciate any feedback on this subject !
Thanks

What parts of the system would that amount buy? are you talking heat exchangers and a muffler (entire 72-74 system)? or just the 72-74 muff?

Milky Tue Dec 16, 2008 11:13 am

Thanks for the first reply. This would be Just for the muffler/rear silencer .

WOW, a little spendy for me, I can swap alot of steel muffs for that price and I'm usually getting 10+ years out of middle quality ones with a little preventative upkeep.
I'd be too old to drive anymore by the time I broke even, just my opinion, others may differ.

Now if that bought the F tubes, U tubes, crossover pipe and muff for a 78 I'd be all over it.

I have a set of stainless exhaust installed on a 2.0.

I have done a post on it before with a video of how they sound.

I,ll show some pictures and the site where they are located.

They are made by Super Trapp. The good is they are rebuild able, so you only buy the parts that wears out. They have a stock sound and are relatively quiet. They are also tunable for the best sound, your taste, and performance.

The best part is they last a long time, which is hard to find for buses.

Check them out.

is your idea to make a stainless muffler similar to the 72-74 style?

i think it's a good idea but you won't sell many at 325 pounds. that would close to 700.00 $CAD once it arrived here.

We are in the process of creating an extractor system that will be god quality, low cost and made of stainless as well. This item is already tested and proven and shares most of the same features of the Thunderbird system, just has larger diameter tubing and a lengthened #4 pipe.

Many people like the stock muffler for it's tone and fitso I am sure that a nice unit made of stainless would sell very well, at the right price..

None of my engines work well with a stock muffler, in fact it has killed a couple of them in the past.

has anyone here ever fabbed their own exhaust out of stainless? you can buy the parts individually and weld em together for under 200 bucks, excluding a muffler and the oval ports, but I have also heard you can make those oval pipes yourself. That however could use a nice picture writeup.

Hi, Thanks for all the replies .All very interesting and very valid points ! i am more aiming for the standard reliable old plodder engine route which i am sure there is a market , especially in the UK as most of the imported buses here are from the USA , Australia and Africa and they mostly seem to have the type 4 engine.I love the sound of the original buses and also the look! nothing against performance system but they all do look aftermarket and modern and this can contradict a original looking bus .

I'd love to get my hands on a stainless steel exhaust, but I found that price a bit to high.

ETA?

I will be in the market in the coming 6 months and it would be nice to know how far off that might be.

Yeah Jake, when do you think it will be ready? I remember there being talk about it last spring/summer?

Just for the muffler? I think it's too much.

For the exhaust pipes (a "header" system) AND muffler? Maybe.

For complete heat exchangers and muffler? Now that would be the ticket!

I think S/S heat exchanger assemblies (which would include the exhaust tubing, of course) would be a better item as the vast majority of us need lasting heat with stock-like heat output.

And with the cars featured, that explains the higher price tag.
