I would not drive a bus that did not have a working emergency brake.

And while a block o' wood or a brick may suffice to keep the car from rolling while parked, it will not do much good when you need the cable brake in an emergency.

Testing the efficiency and balance, of both the service brakes (i.e. hydraulic brakes) and the hand brake (parking brake or emergency brake), on a rolling-road brake dynomometer, has long been a part of the British, oligatory, annual MOT test of vehicle roadworthiness. :D 8)

The park brake lever in the drum actually hits the inner hub preventing it from engaging fully. I've fixed it before, but on a steep hill it wouldn't hold this year. Time to take er apart again this weekend. Anyone else experience that?

If you have a '72, it has one year only bars on the rear emergency lever system- longer space between slots in the spreader bar. Likely you have wrong later ones, had same thing happen to mine- impossible to get right. Find '72 spreader bar in classifieds.

Thanks folks for this thread;

I have rebuilt and adjusted the rear brake drums/ shoes, then adjusted cables (annually) which improved the problem but will still not hold on any incline.

So It looks like I need to replace the cables. Thanks for the help. I will report back when this job is comeplete!
