1979 VW type 4 FI
When cranking over there's a lot of noise like air being pumped. I thought that was just the normal sound of compression but someone mentioned it sounded like a head lift. Additionally, there appears to be some oil dripping from between the head and the cylinder but I haven't looked to see if it's a pushrod tube yet. How do I know if the heads are lifting? If it is leaking how do I determine if it needs to be tightened or if the head was warped? It's a relatively new engine that went to the machine shop the only thing I can think of is I went outside-in while torquing the heads instead of inside-out and maybe that warped something. |

Did the rebuilder use the head sealing rings? If so maybe one of them failed. |

He will need to pull the cylinder head tin to get them all. |

True but the quick and dirty is just see how loose the easy ones are. |

Are there unblocked EGR holes in the heads ? |

I would do a compression test first to see if any of the cylinders are unusually low. Next check to see if you can tell where the sound is coming from and look for obvious things like the EGR holes (if any) are not plugged, check the exhaust fasteners, and make a plan from what you find/observe. |
