When I’m on a hill and starting off in first gear, I notice a grinding noise while letting off the clutch. It sounds like two gears grinding together.I can replicate it on flat ground by increasing rpms and slipping the clutch a bit.

Once in gear, there’s no issues.

The trans mount Looks fine on initial inspection and all the engine mounting bolts are tight. -78 stock bus. Clutch and pressure plate were replaced within the last year.

you need to explain that better, because the way it is written it sounds like you are letting out the clutch before it is fully in gear.

If it only happens on hills, I would make sure the 4 transmission to engine bolts are tight, and that the engine mounts are good. I would also check the trans gear oil level.

could this be a case of clutch chatter,

did you replace the t.o. bearing? pilot bearing?

Thanks

sgkent -here’s the flow
Going up hill>stop sign>shift into 1st>start to let off clutch/accelerate> grind

Checked and Trans oil is full.
Throw out was changed with clutch but not pilot bearing.
Left cv is a little noisy

I’ll try to get under there tomorrow and double check all the mounts.

are you putting it all the way in gear, meaning that if you push the clutch in and then push into first again does the grinding go away?

It could also be the extra load is causing the bad CV to spin or crunch.

It is possible that it is also the pilot bearing.

Check the grub screws also

Slipping splines on a rear drive shaft ? Loose drive shaft nut?
