Yes.. it's the way I did it for my locks... except I did it myself... - change the wafers to match the key NOT cuttin ...

the key you have works on the driver side door, passenger side door, sliding door and ignition lock but NOT on the hatch lock.. is that right?

if it is then the wafers in the hatch lock are worn.. ...

on my Syncro the shift rod is inside a tube about 5" diameter and 5ft long front to back.. I am not sure it's OEM or not... but I'd think it's easy to add.
no problem with accumulated and frozen ...
