Carl..... This is the setup I have in my 79 vert. They are relatively inexpensive and are easy to install. You have to redrill the two mounting holes and then simply slide them onto the headrest posts ...

I had those identical symptoms with my 79 FI a year ago. Replaced gas tank with new one. It has run fine ever since.

I did as instructed in manual and headrest did not budge.
