I had those identical symptoms with my 79 FI a year ago. Replaced gas tank with new one. It has run fine ever since.

Can anyone identify this mystery plug? It's located on drivers side of engine compartment. It'd round rubber with a cap.

That brings up another question: If the orientation is off by 45 degrees, how much error does that create?

Can sending unit be re-clocked without removing tank?

I'm about to pull the engine on my 79 SB to replace the forty year old rubber fuel lines plus refresh the tins.

How many feet of 7mm fuel injection hose should I order?
