That red/white wire is for power to the radiator fan high speed relay in many 86+ models that came from the factory with the larger radiator fan motor.

Don't cut any unused factory wires, just tape ...

The Vanagon is not geared like a Jetta, so it might feel like it pulls harder, especially with a mild tuning with more low end torque, and manual transmission at it.

That big hose route is supposed to be towards the front , behind the booster. Some boxes had a short offset elbow straight out of the box.

I would say do it right the first time, Tdi starter with adapter, starter relay and never look back.
