One time on a Manx buggy while living back east, I actually fabricated an intake air pre-heater which picked up hot air off the surface of the muffler then ran it through a hose to the air cleaner.

It may have been inspired by Ted Mangels' "Splinters". I don't believe Splinters used the VW chassis though, just the plywood hull as a chassis

I haven't actually seen a Corvair in this part of the country in 18 or 20 years. There was a body shell about a 1/2 hour from here at one time but it's gone now too.
