In the Vanagon I try to stay 70 -a little under 4k rpms- but sometimes find myself going a little faster, still in the slow lanes and being passed.

You could turn the air on and run the fan full time.

on second thought, if you turn the heater on, will it circulate the water plus the fan will come on? cooling the motor

How about the one Kennedy uses or the one Leon uses, it's a little bigger than the one Kennedy sells. I have the one Leon puts on and it is much quieter than a stock VW.
