It's a captive nut, you remove it from the transmission side.
This was added when VW went to the Dog House fan shroud.
A 17mm swivel socket on a long extension is how you get to it.

4500 is the most you want to rev a stock motor.

I don't take my 1835cc engine over 4500 rpm. Maybe why that engine hasn't been apart since 1986...

I live in the deep south, its HOT here. My new exhaust has a 1/4 gap from the heat riser. The easiest route would be to cut off the risers plug them and make some block off plates at the exhaust.

I did not remove the clutch. It looked good.
