Replace the timing belt if you don't know for certain it's been done. The water pump can be upgraded to metal and various electronic sensors will go bad on occasion. Get a OBD2 reader and stay on top ...

I drive a 2001 Turbo Sport Beetle every day. Just a few maintenance items and it's just like any other car from that era.

I could imagine a dorm-mobile style top that goes all the way over. I think it would need some exterior braces and you wouldn't have those sky lights but it would make a really big bed I think.

Late chassis early body? The rear mounts need to be cut shorter if that's the case.

Could just need a new set of bearings and a rod. Might need a new crank. If the oil light was flickering that much before the disaster, you were due for a rebuild anyway.
