sorry for the late reply, I did end up changing out the top gen pulley to a Porsche 356 one and it made a big difference in temp, doesnt get above 225 now.

I may be wrong on this but I had 78 which was fuel injected and read that you shouldn't jump fuel injected VW engines?

Jumping VWs with alternator is a big no no.

you can disconnect ignition wire from coil to distributor and connect fuel pressure gauge and turn engine over with the key . - i think that is easier then turning the engine by hand.

A new hose was all I needed to get it running again.

Doubt that the new hose was the fix. Probably needed to prime the fuel pump and carb.

There are lot of new aftermarket fuel pumps that put out too much fuel pressure. that in turn causes fuel to flood in the carb and get down the intake. Fuel out of the muffler is a good sign of that ...

Also, if you put your starter relay in the engine compartment you can eliminate several feet of wire that needs to carry that amperage to your starter, less wire less potential problems.
