There are plastic clips available to hold the spark wires correctly to the fan shroud (see retailers, set of three). I always use these and put the spark wires in the correct location.

I ruled out the drum and the bearings as problematic by swapping with the right side. It seems the drum gets hung up pressing it on the last 1/4" or so.

Thanks for the quick reply. I like the smell of gasoline anyway (especially on an old carbureted car).
