You may have too much of a gap between the switch collar the the steering wheel:

1) does oil smell like gas? leaky fuel pump diaphragm.

The starter current isn't affected; the solenoid pull-in current is though. And that can drag down the coil voltage.

If it cranks fast then this isn't the problem, though, and you should look else ...
