Ok, I'll ask the dumb question... if the starter motor is DC, doesn't it run backwards of the clarity is reversed? Same for wiper motor?

A proper load-based battery tester will tell you if your battery is good.

Crests use these rubber seals, which look to has a slit. I can't tell he scale, though, and they are listed for the crest, not the VW emblem.

You should be able to start with 5V if your starter and state of tune are decent.

I suspect a combo of bad regulator and worn/dirty starter solenoid.

Yes, he has connected the positive battery post to ground with the red cable.

It's definitely not "factory" (German) since it has the USA CONELRAD markers at 640 and 1240 kHz, something not done for other countries.
