instead of looking at a specific year, look at the vanagons available and withing budget, for one reason or another, the right vanagon for you, will show it's self.

Do the electronics fill the rear area so much that there is no room for the radiator?

Lock tight will help insure your torque is less of a problem. A good cleaning of the threads also.

the big hole is for access to an adjustment bolt; the small one is to ...

It's in that indentation where the rubber sheet on the body covers up part of the door.
