Now...actually on topic. It would probably be more feasible to use a modern VW engine and trans in a mid engine configuration.

I did exactly what you described to my Bug. Brought it all up to date but it still looks like a Bug, for the most part. Looks aside, you would never know you are still driving a Bug. I like it!

I used Bugpack seals on mine. No issues with fitment here. Another vote for dumping the empi.
