compare it to another bay? Does it return properly? If so then the cable is not binding. Check the freeplay and make sure her seat is adjusted properly. You do all the driving etc..

if the ONLY reason you are worried about the cable is because the trans shifts hard, check the oil in it, and also consider a new pilot bearing.
