With the lever in the full down position it gives the fan a ground. There should be a brown wire on the lever bracket if you look under there.

I use one of these. Tach, dwell, and voltmeter. Economical and very useful. Can be bought at just about any auto parts store.

Also, the only way to know for sure you have hydraulics or solids is to pull a lifter and look at it (not at all difficult).

You don't have to pull the exhaust to check them.
