At 38K it would still have the original biasply tires
After 40+ years they would be dry rotted and could of been replaced.

You could replace the oil pump with one with a spin-on filter so particles won't go through the motor.

The switch should have DIN thread which is not tapered. Tapered pipe threads are real close and some people just run a tapered pipe tap into the hole but doing that will mean no going back.

Have you checked/cleaned the ground strap from the tran.s to body (front of tran.s)? That is the path to the battery ground from engine/trans. assy.

Get some 0.010" shim stock and make some spacers for the rocker arm mounts and readjust the valves until they all have 0.006" clearance.

Just a guess but the switch could be for heated seats. Is it a rocker switch, high/low?

Should not the spring be on the other side of the lever like the rest of the linkage? I think that's your problem.

You said you ran it with the valve covers off so I guess the question is does it leak with them on? Oil in your heater box's will smell and smoke for a while.

Post in the Performance Forum you will meet folks with set-ups like yours. I would buy a set of numbered drills and buy the 130's and drill as needed until you find the sweet spot.

Local auto glass shop might loan you one as it is also used for locking rubber channel windshield rubber.
