Sounds like bearing material. Is the oil glittery, at all? Like, if you put a spoon in the drained oil and run the spoon around in a circle, are there any glittery trails?

I use a 1 foot, 1/4” drive extension with a 1/4” swivel socket with my tiny 1/4” ratchet. Go from the passenger side.

Definitely welded in wrong, or, if the heater channels had ever been replaced, they may be welded in wrong. Either mistake yield the misalignment. It is not just a, “set into place and weld” operation ...
