I would get new studs for the cooler, new seals and instal it exactly the way you did. That oil filter flange nut is M8x1.25, so if the nut doesn’t thread try a tap of the same size first.

They’re ok. They don’t come pre-adjusted and some like to leak from day one. I would clean, lube, and adjust an original 10/10 times, unless it was damaged somehow.
