new expansion tank caps are available @ the dealership.
i use OG tanks & caps on my vans. never a problem.

if my method becomes outdated, i would convert to the later ball style tank & ca ...

you're going to want more than 1600cc for a 71 foot car!
if what you have is a '71, then there are literally a thousand threads about what you want to do.

messing about with /refreshing your ignition system could have fixed the problem.
check the electical connections @ the coil and voltage from the O2 sensor.

the answer you will get--and have gotten--here is dual carbs.
that is the easiest solution.
to properly set up and tune a "performance" single carb is actually harder than duals.

i used tank grommets scrounged from an 82 van when i did my tank.
not a great solution for all, but it is what i chose to do.
they are holding up fine for some years now.

anything like new valve guides?

worn valve guides are common cause of oil smoke on startup, especially after a hard run.

I did take the bypass screws out to replace the very small o-ring on them. I'll try fiddling with those first.
you need to adjust the valves FIRST!

use a generous amount.
but don't "pack" it like the manual says.

use enough to keep the pushrod and lever covered and sneak some up onto the pivot pin too.
