while I wouldn't really ever install the CVs and axles w/o the tires on.
you can slip the hub on the splines then put a wheel on 2-3 lugs and hold that between your knees to restrain the 35#s.

think of R&P ratios like the size of your OXEN before the cart..
a loaded cart needs stronger (and slower) oxen
a lighter cart can make haste with younger and faster oxen.

the position of the nipple is important.
again, if that rear facing automatic nipple is as in the image posted above..
then it is on the wrong side of the waterpump to prop ...

my answer is probably too much for too far Wink

that transaxle did end up with 4th gear going out about 5years later.
unsure if it was related, this tow was ~1000miles in 3rd gear..

it's actually inbound/returning coolant.
the T-stat regulates the return (cold supply) side of the loop.

the small hoses that attach to the Pump are returns from their various loops.

SG, to me that appears to have the fitting on the 'wrong' side of the T-Stat.
it won't be in 'constant flow' as is required. it would only flow when the T-stat opened. which may be ok for the OE tra ...

later model seats with armrests will slide right in.
westy or pass van seats.. the pass vans have alittle more cushion if you need that.

I may wager a guess that this van has already been repainted once (at least in this area).
perhaps a prior rust abatement that is losing it's grip. and the respray has shrunk and cracked.
