I agree with crankey also that second handle will save your wrists before breaking them, also don't forget the pilot hole and use some type of lube on the bit (ie rapid tap) and the hole will be clean ...

I would drop the pan and see what is going on. Just buy a new gasket first. Yes it will be messy but then you will know.
Then be sure to let us know what you find with pics if possible.

If the pipes have been bent while you were trying to loosen them, replace them, the last thing you want is a leak.

Go with a mig 220v and i agree with the bigger than you think you need.
Once you start welding you will either love it and want to weld a wider range of things and thicknesses or want to never do it ...
