With the seam horizontal, the sleeve flexes easier when the axle moves up and down which means it should last longer.

The flange of the axle boot sleeve should point horizontally toward the rear.

I don't believe that there was ever a 9 digit VIN that started with 114.
VIN's with the third digit indicating the year did not begin until the 1965 model year which started in August of 1964.
