My biggest boost on that size eng was adding a 2bbl carb, solved the hill problems on roads i usually use or getting upto speed in traffic, rarelly did the 70's mph tho.

Section of same dia rod u could make one u need correct tapping 'die' to thread outside of rod, round other end , shouldn't be that hard with correct tools.

The hyd lifters does require the oil pumpscrew on filter in order to keep lifters fom plugging up from any crap getting in the oil. Not knowing how eng was cleaned internally sounds likeoil ppassages ...
