Also check the steering box, it is crucial that the tension on the worm gear is adjusted correctly or it will also cause the wandering you describe

On a 56 the ebrake cables do not run up front to the inspection cover. They run directly from the ebrake handle to the rear of the car.

I came across this thread looking for the same answer for my 1951 convertible.

I found an M2.5 X 0.45 tap worked like a charm.
