Did you check the head for warping before the rebuild? Did you retorque the heads after couple of thousand miles? Why was the engine rebuilt?

Thats not a 300$ repair on the quarter panel..Might be $1500 or more. Lots of seam rusts. Don't even have an engine pic so can't really tell.

Pump the brake pedal several times with the engine off and hold it down while cranking. Once the engine starts and you feel the pedal goes down the booster is working.

All of the hobie cat vanagons that I have ever seen had the hobie cat at the front of the door and the hobie cat lettering and logo on the nose like this-

If the noise dissapears when the clutch is depressed. I would take a wild guess either the clutch shattered (rivets gave out) or the throw out bearing is busted.
