I'll short answer Mark Tucker's post as I believe he's referring to the fact that the bottom of a camshafts base circle is not the area of most lash (it's usually just before the ramp of the lobe) and ...

The case looks cut for bigger barrels too and it's Brazillian (single relief). Isn't starting to sound like a good choice for a builder.

These heads were in the deal too:

Picked up a pile of VW parts yesterday. I was mainly interested in the exhaust and a pair of carbs in the lot, but it was one of those all or nothing deals. Anyway, it came with a long block that I'm ...

Ring gear and flywheel are one piece, otherwise I would.

Sorry, but I'm going to disagree. If that pattern were all the way around the gear then yeah, classic pattern of starter trying to engage running engine, but that pattern is only on 1/4 of the teeth, ...

Yeah, starter is junk, shaft has side play and with power it spins at inconsistent rpms. Getting a new flywheel and starter and putting it all back together. I'll post the final outcome when I get th ...

The starter gear freewheeling but still engaged on the flywheel makes the most sense and was my thought also, but the bushing isn't fried and the starter spins free by hand right now, case paint looke ...
