Frustrating! I fought with similar problems but eventually sorted it out with new transmission mounts and a careful driveshaft alignment.

Where did you get that accessory power panel with the Syncro light? Very nice!
I put it together -- it shows outside temp, battery volts, and barometric pressure. Thanks, -Bill |

Hi All! I've lost track of what reasonable Vanagon prices are. It seems like they are down a bit from a few years ago? If I put my reasonably nice tin-top Syncro on the market, where should I start ...

Not quite sure what you're asking? Are you talking about suspension upgrades to increase payload capacity?

For me, it's certainly something to do with the shaft. The van is smooth as silk without it.
I'm not (yet) convinced about your idea on the flange heights. I'm thinking that all the driveshaft ca ... |

Generally you want to store steel/iron at 45% relative humidity or less.
On the other hand, I don't think an old engine is going to be hurt much if you hose it down with your favorite rust prevente ... |

Hmmm... Not a nice van and no idea if it's a deal or not -- but might be of interest to some folks since it looks like an original turbo diesel. 2WD full Westy in pretty weathered shape. About 5 mi ...

Thanks Alistair! For my laser I used a cheapo laser bore sight (which is a laser pointer that you load into a gun and it shines through the barrel to show you where to set your sights). These thing ...

Nice! Thanks for the math. I threw the original together in a big hurry and it solved my vibration problems a couple of years ago so I didn't think about it too much. I'll update my target when I g ...

I actually went back and checked runout on the driveshaft tube rather than the u-joint flange and I saw surprisingly little -- something like 4-6 thou at both ends. Much better than I would have gues ...

FYI -- here are links to the scaled SVG image of my alignment target and the spreadsheet that I used to produce the target. The target takes into account the length of my laser. If your laser is a d ...

I'd certainly be concerned about the fluid and the play from your front transaxle input shaft -- neither of those things sound right. Maybe a bad seal and/or bearing on that input shaft?

So, folks who have rebuilt your driveshafts with new u-joints and guibo -- did you get the shaft balanced? Was it out of balance after the rebuild?
Thanks! -Bill '89 Syncro |

I haven't had the shaft balanced and the nearest place with a machine is 2-3 hours away. I've been hoping that nothing I've done to it would change the balance significantly -- but who can say? ![]() |
