I prefer the 'bite' from the steering wheel while going through 40-60 mph
corners in the seventies VW bus. Pure tactile feel.
Power boost would most definitely take that away.

sounds like a hydraulic lifter has failed to pump up or come apart.

Those came with head gaskets but with 115 psi cranking they are ok.
There are thin cylinder base shims between cylinder & case.
Those are not worth looking at till rebuild time.

Battery connections.
Clean posts & the contact point for the ground braid to the body,near the - post.
Start with those four points & charged battery.

Try the hole in the fan housing near the dipstick.
Should be a little to the left of it. That screw is longer than the others.
Goes through the alternator front tin IIRC.

1800 does rev higher in stock form, has a little more top end in every gear
compared to a 2.0L.
But that applies to operating a four speed manual trans, I would think the 2.0L
and it's small tor ...

As far as reassembling your own used measured case & crank/rods,
16 hours is right at the sweet spot for stock Type IV.
The more efficiency you seek the more hours & $$$$ you spend.

Try Rockauto, under VW Transporter, they are selling individual CVs
& claim they have Lobro brand at IAP GKN Lobro 211598101,
I would just order that & compare to your failed unit for authe ...

The only that piece makes it way out of the ring groove while the piston is in the cylinder is if there's chunks of piston skirt in the sump.

250 miles, no radio, lights. (carbed, with mechanical fuel pump)
the injected models you will get 150 or so. Because of electronics.
points ignition doesn't draw a lot of juice.

Just keep in mind you may have to loosen some of the smaller stud
nuts along that perimeter of the case. And a couple pry bars for the 'ears'
on the original pump, so the body does not cock in the ...
