In the space between the rear bench seat and the back there is a thick metal bar that serves as the pivot to recline the seats; use it to attach the LATCH side clips. Then behind the seats in the rear ...

Can you post a picture of the spindle in question? Unless the bearing seized, the spindle is likely fine. The taper bearing system is pretty resilient overall. Clean the spindle with a gray Scotchbrit ...

A fire extinguisher is at the top of my list, mounted right in front of the shifter. This has saved my Thing once so far and was entirely worth the ~$20.

My tool and spares kit was inspired by Capt ...

That Thing looks like quite a project, but it's worth salvaging and the result will be worth it!

CV flanges are the red arrow in your picture. Before swapping the transmission, have you tried adjus ...

First gear has always been an issue on my transmission. I've never seen a reason to downshift to first when I'm not stopped. Avoiding that is the easiest solution.

Trying to gear a VW for low end grunt and a comfortable 75-80mph makes for an interesting compromise. What size tires are you looking to run?

I'd personally keep the tires on the stock-ish side (~ ...

Much appreciated
