When I opened the engine bay, the electric box to the left had all the wires dangling out
....
Before I left, I cleaned the grounding points


Did you check "the grounds" in the engin ...

I believe the grounds for ALL the rear lights are on a single bolt below the coil in the engine bay ... ("5b" in the pic)...

There is a special ground wire that branches from the small bundle of wires that go to the side of the distributor. This brown wire is VERY important in closed loop operation after the engine is warm. ...
