Cool stories.

108km was a serious trip back in the day in that Bus, especially over those passes. I'm guessing a modern tourist Bus (if they still run them) are not a whole faster over those passes.

appears to be an A- something (A- U, A-M, A -W ?) American occupation zone, German pre 1955 plate.
Spruce trees are getting really sparse around the ridge so this must be around 1400meters+ ( or 5000ft) elevation. that does NOT rule out the Schwarzwald (Black Forrest), where the highest summits are around 1500 meters and bald. (and NOT part of the Alps).
Breathtakingly beautiful shot !

^^according to my info only A/B goes that high for the second number sequence so I reckon it's 536-539 Regensburg Stadt and in range of the mountains...

Great info, where did you find that ?
Regensburg is closer to the Alps (ca100km) than to the Schwarzwald (ca300km).

These Barndoors are pictured outside the Autohaus Buchwinkler VW Dealership (tbc), which still exists.

It is located in Berchtesgaden, south east Germany in the Bavarian Alps right on the Austrian border.
Hitler’s bolt-hole, The Eagle’s Nest, is just 4km away.

Berchtesgaden is a German town in the Bavarian Alps on the Austrian border. South of town, Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest retreat, the Kehlsteinhaus, has a restaurant with alpine views. The Dokumentation Obersalzberg museum chronicles the Nazi era. Salzbergwerk Berchtesgaden illuminates the salt mine’s 500-year history. Lifts lead to Obersalzberg and Rossfeld ski areas. To the south, trails cross Berchtesgaden National Park

Is the DLX in the background really a BD ? appears to have a post 55 fresh air roof. What's interesting is, that it has additional knee height trim, much in the fashion of Kohlruss coachbuilds. Wonder if it was a factory DLX having only the trim added or a full coach build. Kohlruss facility was in Salzburg, which is not far away at all (25km).

I’m not sure on the Deluxe, but I thought it looked slab-fronted.
Sign-written too.

Rocks, I don't think so; the bus on the road is just on the road. I "think" the main characters were on the yellow big tour bus, so it was the center of the driving action.
