Just looking at the intermediate section of the casing and it looks different to a stock one to me.
Plus the car has a Berg 5 shift lever. Is it possible to tell whether or not the trans is a 5 speed?

Can you get in and go thru the shift pattern? My tranny is a 5 speed Transform which I understand was based off the earlier Berg 5speed. My 5th is to the right of 3rd gear. My shifter is a Hurst that I clearances the base plate in order to be able to reach reverse and allow enough movement to engage the 5th gear. |

That's not really an option, unfortunately. The car it's in is for sale at the other end of the country and if I start asking the seller questions, it'll double the price!! _________________ 1963 Turbo WBX Bug

It's a quite nice looking and actually fairly rare kit car, which is probably worth the asking price, but I spotted the shifter and non-stock looking trans so I thought I'd do a bit more research before buying it.
If I end up buying it, I'll post more pics. _________________ 1963 Turbo WBX Bug

This is all academic now because the car has sold before I could get it!

It's a Fiberfab Jamaican 2
Specifically, this one is quite well known apparently.
It was converted into a steam powered vehicle by someone called Peter Barrett and then was imported to the UK in about 2009 by Greg Walker.
Sad to see it in the state it's in now, but if you Google Barrett Steam car you'll find info about it. _________________ 1963 Turbo WBX Bug

Wouldn’t be surprised if someone following this thread brought it out from under you! Happened to me once….ran my mouth on samba regarding a Bosch 010 & a Mallory dual point I discovered at an old VW repair shop off the beaten path that had long since transitioned from aircooled VW to Imports in general. Went back the next morning with my $75 and both were gone. Owner said someone came by later that afternoon(shortly after I reported my good fortune on samba) paid the $75 supposedly on my behalf for the distributors. |

Pro tip:
Now that you’ve been on the Samba for several years you probably know who the transaxle builders are who post here.
Send one of them a message and ask privately instead next time, it’s usually pretty easy for internet deal hunters to identify the car you were looking at and get sniped. _________________ 1956 Dove Blue Panel
