Hello everyone, very new here. I have a 77 bay window that needs an automatic transmission. I found one but it came out of a type 4 vw car. Does anyone know if this will work in the 77 bus? Thanks |

it can be made to work, but is not the same trans that your bus left the factory with.
the gearing is probably different too.
early autos are "003" boxes and later ones are "010".
welcome and good luck _________________ 88 Van WBX, A/T - 13 JSW TDI 6M/T - 2012 Touareg TDI Sport |

I would expect the gearing to be much too high for a Bus! Dad put an auto box out of a type 3 in his Bus and it blew out seals and lost all the fluid on the first run on the highway. It was horribly sluggish too geared that high. _________________ We had the stone age, the bronze age, the industrial age and now we are in the age of mass deception and mind control for corporate profit. Look for a bus 010. Its a better trans used all the way into the 90s. Parts are still plentiful.

A ‘77 bus should have an 010 in it from the factory.
The same guts were used in a lot of other cars,
So a normal Aamco type transmission shop that does ‘Murrican cars should be able to go through it for you. _________________ Bus Motor Build

Thanks for all the replies! Looks like I will continue searching for the correct trans, the 010. |

Another related question. I see a lot of adds for transmissions but I am seeing the verbiage as type 1, type 2, type 3, type 4. Could someone please explain how this may or may not relate to an 010 automatic transmission that my bay window would have original been equipped with? Thanks again |

So....
Type 1 ( as a general class are beetle and thing which is a subset of type 1)....as far as I know never had a "FULLY" automatic transmission. They were a servo assisted manual trans with no clutch pedal. Not what you need to worry about.
Type 2 are the bus. All buses early or late are Type 2 vehicles. The 1972 and on....Type 2 buses....used the engine from Type 4 cars (411 and 412). The proper fully automatic transmission for type 2 is called the "010".
Type 3 cars (fastback, notchback and squareback)...use a type 1 based engine but used a fully automatic transmission called the 003. It has a specific range of final drive ratios different than the 010.
Type 4 cars....the 411 and 412.....used a 003 fully automatic transmission but with a slightly different final drive ratio than the 003 used in the type 3 cars.
The main automatic section of all of these transmissions..... 003 and 010....is essentially the same with some control differences over the years. But the final drive used in the 003...
Whether it was set up for a type 3 or 4 car....is generally a lot different....too far different...to use in a bus in place of an 010. Also....from dim memory....the 010 final drive section is longer and wider than the 003.
A lot of people selling vw automatic transmissions have no idea what they have. They may state "fits type 2, type 4" etc. While that may be technically true that it can be "bolted in" and it will drive....it does not mean its right or will live.
Ask them for the serial # off the side and look it up. Don't trust an opinion. Ray |

Easiest way to tell a Bus/Vanagon transmission from a type 3/4 transmission is the bellhousing is cast iron on the Bus versus aluminum on a type 3/4.
The early Bus automatics were 003. The change to 010 was around '75. To tell the difference, the 003 has a vacuum modulator and a wire connector for the kickdown. The 010 is all mechanical and has extra linkage on the side to connect the throttle cable for the kick down. _________________ Kenneth
