Hi All,
I have a '63 Beetle which has been converted to 12V. It has a 12V flywheel (I believe) as I recently removed an old 200mm clutch and re-installed a new 200mm clutch in the car. I think it is the original 6V trans however as it looks like it has been grinded to fit the larger flywheel.
But it currently has what I believe is a 6V starter (Bosch U-EED 0,5/6 L34). Can I just install a 12V starter in the car and replace the bushing to suit?
This one in particular:

Thanks for the advice! |

If it has a 12v 200mm flywheel, you need a 12v starter. The 6v one will have a different gear pitch. It will grind like a mofo.
If you get the standard 12v non-supported starter, you also will need the 6v to 12v conversion bushing for the bellhousing.
If you get a self supporting autostick starter, you don't need a bushing. |

Thanks Pruneman. Not sure what you're referring to in the above however. |

It was a different starter used in the later cars with the AutoStick transmission. It's self supported, so you don't need to mess with the stupid bushing in the bellhousing.

The Autostick starters don't have the starter pinion shaft fitted into the bell housing. They "Self support" the pinion shaft.
No bushing required.
The upper starter in the image below is an auto stick starter. See the difference?
Prune, you have treed me on posts two times today.

That's the bushing you'll need. If the engine is out, it's easy to change. If you are doing it with the engine in, it's a bit harder. Most people us a tap that will "screw into" the old bushing with enough bite to pull it out. |

The self- supporting starter is the Bosch SR17X. As stated above they came in vehicles with automatics and auto- sticks as well as being the go- to starter in many Things.
I've never bought a new one. Don't need to. Still have a few removed from autostick vehicles decades ago.
Why screw around with a bushing if you don't have to?

Did you look at the "compatible vehicles" list ? Do you have a Jetta or an EOS? |
