I have asked Jeremy about them in the past, he said that he wouldn't be making them for us.... _________________ póg mo thóin

Secretary Sue here,
I'm writing this under Bob's name, cuz the pics are all in his name, in T3 parts and accessories. These pics are from 2008, when Bob needed to make up another Type 3 Tow Bar, cuz our other one that he made was still down in Texas.
I've included the caption, and the pics in hopes that it'll make searching for it here in the Type 3 forum easier.
(quote)
Since this question comes up quite regularly, here's how to modify a Super Beetle towbar for use as a Type 3 towbar.
After I cut off the "ears" on the Super bug towbar, I welded on 24" long, 2" diameter tubes to extend the total length and then welded the "ears" back on to each tube end. I also added a 21 inch long , 1 1/2" X 1 1/2 " piece of angle as a crossbar for extra support.

I went the other direction and built a mount on the car. Then use a bug tow bar to hook up to the mount. Towed from Boise to Spokane a few times, Boise to Omaha once and the 2012 Invasion and back to Omaha never had a issue. All at Interstate speeds +5-10 mph. The mount protects the spare tire well also. _________________ 71 DD Squareback

Here is a picture of the one I had made. Uses a bug tow bar. You have to remove the spare tire well while it is mounted

I really like the "modified super beetle" tow bar, as it was easy to convert, can still be used on a super beetle, fits both early and late t-3s (even clears the OE fuel pump location). The pics above that Sue posted, show what is needed to modify one. Once I had the extra length tubes, and the "U" bolts, it took about 1.5 hours to set and weld everything up. The mounting plate can even stay attached to the beam, IF you're not too low in front (no more than a 2 inner spline drop).
I also built one like Bill Jacobs did. This was back in 2000 though. I even did a write up for building one on both STF, and here, as Richard Green needed something to move his t-3, and didn't have the extra cash laying around to rent a trailer or tow dolly. And yes, it works pretty good too, but I found that you had to remove the spare tire and it's tray to use it. That's something that you don't have to do with the modified super bug tow bar. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I kind of figured out a design( with Dave Whitaker, another T34 owner) for a T34 tow bar based on Jeremy's design and the clearances we need. Jeremy said he would give it a shot, but again he needed a T34 to make sure it would work.
If anyone wants the AutoCadd drawing, let me know. _________________ Tom Reay

I would LOVE a copy of the AutoCAD drawing for the tow bar.

I'll do what I can to get it built and let you know if it works on my T34. _________________ - Steve

I have finally come out with a Type 3 tow bar. It is a bracket that attaches to the opening of the front beam and the two lower beam bracket bolts. It stays attached to the car and then the tow bar attaches when needed.

The only problem I see with that plate set up, is that some of us who use the Airtex E2000 electric fuel pump move our pumps to that middle opening, versus keeping the fuel pump in the stock opening and kinking the fuel hose.
That's not taking into account that some of the guys who want to get even lower are relocating that lower beam clamp bolt and hole (on each side). Just a few thoughts.
It looks like for a stock height non FI car it would be a great solution. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Thanks for the feedback Bobnotch. I know next to nothing about type 3s so any feedback is appreciated. Is the pump relocation something I could add a bracket for?
Yeah old_man I saw your design and I do like it I was trying to make it all in one piece for easier installation.
Again any feedback is appreciated. _________________ Why buy what you can build.

I think an FI type3 owner who has already converted to the Airtex style pump, would probably zip tie the pump out of the way while using the tow bar plate. Keep in mind that the pump bracket uses 2 pieces of steel trapping the lip (sandwiched) with 2 M-6 studs on rubber bushings. The pump normally resides in the far right opening (LHD cars), hence why the hose from the tank to pump has a tendency to kink, and why we relocate the pump to the middle due to it's length (the pump itself). If an FI owner still uses the stock pump, then there's no problem with the plate mount set up. Same applies to the carb cars, as there's nothing attached to the beam in that area.
I hope this helps. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Jeremy,
I really like the look / design of your tow bar. However, I would recommend making it a little heaver duty, especially where the bar attaches to the frame head unit. My family has been into Volkswagens my whole life, and we had many adventures where we would flat tow a VW. Thus I have seen many scary moments when flat towing. From the towed car having a blowout, to an attachment pin breaking or falling out. When you see a car that is being towed slewing across the lane, it is a very scary moment.
This is especially true if you plan to sell them. You never know what a person may do or forget to do when hooking up, and they could try and hold you liable. _________________ 69 road Bug 2110
