I think I've managed to not go down the rabbit hole but I feel like I could slip over the edge if I'm not careful. Especially the push rod tubes! I want to make sure I can have the car on the road by late April.

So, you retired and inherited a fortune since we last spoke?

Laughing Laughing Retired!!! I wish. The work on my Ghia's is moving at a snails pace because of work. Negative on the fortune as well. Laughing so good thing VW parts are relatively inexpensive.

With only 23,000 miles, I didn't expect that the heat risers would be plugged, but sure enough they were. There's plenty of information on the site for different methods of unclogging, most have either used a piece of clutch cable with a drill or drilled a hole at either end of the center section to clean it out and then weld the hole. I gave the cable/drill method a try except I didn't have an old piece of clutch cable around. I did however have an old 1/4" drain snake. Worked great and to me, it seems like it would do the job faster than a piece of clutch cable.

The coiled wire is very rugged and can be bent at different angles. I kept the tip mostly straight at first until I broke through then I bent it more out to the side little by little until the entire diameter had been cleaned.

It took me about an hour and this is how much it took out.

I just did this with my intake manifold also. Couldn't believe how much crap came out of those heat risers. Not unlike the EGR tube on most modern cars.

Will you be painting it as well? I sprayed mine with some high temp primer, and I just bought some Eastwood High Temp Factory Grey that I'll be painting it with once the pollen storm subsides here.

Yes, I'm planning to paint the manifold if we can get some warmer weather. Since I'm keeping the car original, not restoring it, I'm not sure if it would look out of place to have a new looking manifold? I bought some high temp silver and high temp clear, but am still undecided which one I should use.

I can understand why. I'm thankful it went so well. Jobs like this are very educational though, as I have to admit I had no clue why that pipe was there or what it does.

Yes. That was the least enjoyable task during my Ghia's restoration. Messy hardly describes it.

From my research this seems to be a close match to factory.

Dupli-Color DE1611 Engine Enamel Spray Paint with Ceramic - Ford Gray - 12 oz Aerosol Can

I used it last spring and has held up well on at least a couple of 100+ mile drives.

I have forgotten the complete tale but I do know there is a bent NOS one here as well as my original with a cable broken inside of it.
It seems they may have mated as I do not recall the third one…

Spent last few days cleaning up the fan shroud.

By the way, Can "M157M9" be decoded into something meaningful?

The shroud and generator plates are in such good shape that I am not going to repaint them. There's some scrapes and chipped paint here and there but overall, it's in great shape and I prefer original.

I swapped out the newer replacement Brazilian generator, and installed the rebuilt original Bosch with push on terminals, with a manufacture date of Jan 1968.
I had a hard time getting the inner pulley onto the generator. I eventually decided to take some emery cloth to the shaft as well as the hole on the pulley and that took care of the issue.

I finished cleaning up the intake manifold. There's a lot of bare areas with no paint that had surface rust, so I took off all the loose rust and treated those areas with Phosphoric Acid. I have some high heat clear paint and am thinking of using that and preserve the original "survivor" look. I can always give it a coat of gray later if I change my mind?

Thank you Michael. I don't really think about violins when my mind is on Ghia's (which is the majority of the time Laughing ), but you're right, restoring an old violin does not mean make it new again. That's an interesting comparison.
Cars are re-finished all the time, but re-finishing an old violin totally destroys it's value. I guess if my 68 were not in such good shape, I would do what ever it needed, but as they say, they're only original once and I like them that way.

Unfortunately, some of the engine tins will need to be painted, mostly the bottom ones. The top ones I think I can leave as is or maybe just touch up a few places.

I've been using GUNK "Original" with great results and it's fast. I scrape away thick build up with plastic tools. Then I wet the part with GUNK and use a denture brush for scrubbing which is much stiffer than a tooth brush. I tried Simple Green again today and it just didn't cut it so I ended up using GUNK again. It costs $4 at Wal-Mart. The instructions say to rinse it with water but on many small parts I just wipe it dry with paper towels. For bolts and hardware, I just put some GUNK in a small jar and throw them in. Let them soak for a while before scrubbing.

I cleaned up my thermostat by holding it in a lathe and spinning it up. I could apply some metal polish on a cloth and rub it up really well . To make it expand I just used a heat gun and the bellows opened right out. I got a really good result.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Holding it in a drill chuck might be an alternative way to spin it.
