Thanks Ratwell!!Interesting about the coilovers being used on the trucks but not the campers seem they would have been worthy of that enhancement!! This weekend I will throw the the bilsteins on and see what she rides like! I am actually hoping the new shocks lift the ass up a bit on the bus. I had boges up front and monroe's in the rear. That would explain why when I went over a bump in the bus the front felt soft but the back would knock my fillings out. You can see it slightly sagging in this pic. It does of course level out more once the passengers are in the vehicle.
|
Shocks don't affect ride height; it's the springs that do that (or torsion bars, or whatever is acting as springs). The shock will come to rest in whatever position the spring lets it. Imagine the bus sitting still, with no shocks installed. Normal height. Next, imagine the bus with no springs installed....plop.

I have some Bilsteins with a label that says they are B46 638HA for T2 Transporter 9/69 up. Also VW cross reference # 221 513 031 (I believe for the H.D rear version). These are about 10yrs old, so the numbering system has probably changed.

I'm confused at what happened.
- The 'correct' Bilstein, B46-0828 (front) and B46-0839 (rear), are NLA
- B46-0032 (front), for Split Window and Beetle, works for bays?
- B46-0040 (rear) for Split Window and Beetle, WONT work for bays?
- B46-1047 (rear), for GMC Safari, can be made to work for bays?
Have I parsed all this correctly? |
so:
Bilstien:
B46-0032-HO Front Shock
B46-1047 Rear Shock
is anyone using this combo? thanks in advance... |

Got my new Bilsteins for the front and fitted the full set last week. What a difference! I still have the stock swaybar, and may keep it. There is hardly any dip when braking and cornering feels so much safer and firmer. I've yet to take it for a proper drive, but so far am greatly impressed.

Hi,
I have Bilstein rear Shocks I pulled off a 1970 Bay Window I purchased. They still feel charged, so I'm wondering if they will fit my 1971 Westy camper.
The numbers stamped on the shock do not match any part numbers listed in the threads (including this one) searched.
My numbres are 22114382
and 44011449w01
Total Throw is 62.5 cm (~24 5/8").
Total Compression is about 48.3 cm (19") (no pic).
The lower Shock mount bushing is about 14mm wide.
Bolt OD is about 12 mm.
The upper shock mount bushing ID is about 12 mm; So is bolt OD as bolt
Wondering if any bushings from of the the KYB bushing kit will fit the Bilstein Lower bushings. I think the upper bushing is in good shape.
Any info is appreciated.
Thanks,

Much appreciated Brian.
Is that short answer Expandable to:
Q1: I'm wondering if they will fit my 1971 Westy camper?
A1: Yes.
Q2: Wondering if any bushings from of the the KYB bushing kit are 14mm OD with a 2mm wall thickness and 12 mm ID, so as to fit the Bilstein Lower bushing's ID of 14mm and a 12 mm OD bolt?
A2: Yes?

They will fit your '71.
I am not sure, but the bushing kits I have gotten for my KYBs came with multiple sizes and aren't expensive. _________________ Wash your hands

Should work. I know that 1968 had a short lower front shock mount stud that differed from later buses. You should be fine. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

'68/'69 had short mounts up front, '70-'79 are the same.
Anyone know if that holds for the rear? _________________ Wash your hands

These rear shocks will not fit a bay, The pictures shown show a split bus with a Type 1 IRS suspension conversion and not a baywindow bus. The rear shocks for a bay are much longer. Very irresponsible or ignorant on the part of whoever is in charge of that website |

The Bilstein part #'s are:
24-632799 front
24-632805 rear
The fronts appear to be available at Rock Auto. $543.24 to my door in Metro Vancouver. Rock Auto has not had the rears for some time. I checked with my local supplier (Lordco) and they do not have stock in any of their stores in BC or Alberta. 4-12 weeks out. FYI. |

may just be sample pictures?
my impression from dealing with T2 Detectives in the past is that they definitely know what they are doing (in a good way) |

The shocks are not sold per pair on Rockauto. The price this morning was $405.46cdn per pair, plus over $112 for shipping and $25+ for Federal GST.
Don't forget that today we are paying about $1.40cdn for one US dollar by the time the credit card company takes their exchange rate fee. |
