bought a pressure washer powered sand blaster to get to hard to reach areas
It was like $35US on Amazon
I used it to hit the area under the fuel tank
It made it look like this
Not perfect t but much better
I also hit in between all the rear vents (That’s why I bought it )
I dont have any good pics of it before
Just this one
Here’s he after
Unfortunately , the sand is now waterborne
So my car has a nice patina now
Time to get the DA sander back out _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

Why not just spray Ospho on the rusted bits and convert them to iron oxide?
Spray it, and roll the body into the garage for the night. Problem solved. _________________ I have learned over the years.

OSPHO ordered
Be here by my next days off
I hope |
You can buy Ospho from Home Depot. It's in the paint department.
I can imaging Home Depot is quite a drive from Tehachapi.
Ospho is as thin as water. So you can put it in a spray bottle and hit all the area's that you can't with a brush.
Just make sure to wear gloves and a long sleeve shirt you hate, when you spray it.
Safety glasses and avoid breathing the mist too! _________________ I have learned over the years.

We actually have a Home Depot here in town
It doesn’t carry OSPHO
We are a smaller community and we don’t have a gigantic Depot, so we can’t get everything locally
It’s fair trade off for lower crime and quiet living , so I’ll take it lol _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

I used the Ospho in the hard to reach areas
It worked really well
I didnt take pics, sorry
But I did take the DA sander to the the surface rust I created when I sand blasted
I’m getting really close to priming the body _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

Ol’ Herb emerged from hibernation today
I pushed everything could out of the garage so I could clean up a little
That gave me a little room to work , even if it’s all shoved out to the walls
I took a look at the engine sitting in the sun
I was sick of it being on the stand and decided to take it off
Mrs.slave1pilot wasn’t as enthusiastic as I was to pull it off the stand and on to the Jack
But it was no problem
Since it’s off, I decided it was time to mate it to the trans
Probably be harder to work on it that low to the ground but it’s progress

Those almost look like old-school copper exhaust nuts holding the case halves together. _________________ My name's Steve and it's pronounced "Bust 'em" (cuz people think I'm Tom) 😏 |

That's what we call an "open motor". I see numerous openings for critters and debris to get inside. I could tell the story of Zeke the Freak's Gene Berg motor eating itself alive on break- in. An 8mm nut down the intake will do that. Then there was the one I built that squealed like there was a tiny fiddler inside. Turns out my brother stuck a 3/8" bolt in a vice, hacked it off and couldn't find the cutoff. He couldn't find the cutoff because it went down the intake of my motor in the other bay. Fortunately that debris couldn't get past the valve stem. It made an unusual squeak when the motor was running.

It’s possible those are exhaust nuts, they are the same thread and pitch
The engine is covered all of the time
I only take the cover off to work on it or do pics
I understand your concern though _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

Agree. I put masking or duct tape over all engine 'holes', even if I'm simply removing/reinstalling something and regardless of how long it's going to sit. I've seen and heard of too many cases of nuts/washers, rocks and other debris (even mice) finding their way into an engine. _________________ Kafer_Mike

Stripping the under hood area the past couple of days
So much work to get it down to bare metal

took a little break to freshen up the sandrail to sell it off
I repainted it, added new seat covers, and replaced the shift knob
Before
And after
You can see the new shift knob here (I added a new steering wheel too)
And the seat covers
I also forgot new plug wires
I’m pretty happy with it
I’m only selling because I didn’t take it out last summer, and only once the summer before _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

Nice looking sandrail! When I lived in California, my parents had a cabin near California City (actually a town called Cantil, near a spot called Jawbone Canyon which was very popular for off-roaders), not far from Tehachapi. Damn I miss those days... _________________ .

That’s exactly where I used to take it.
We would go to Jawbone and the surrounding areas
There’s lots of trails out there.

Sold the sandrail last week to one of my employees for $3500
He’s very happy with it
I finally got moving on Ol’ Herb again
New tires mounted to the 15x6 wheels
I went with 205/60R15 all the way around
Let me know what you guys think _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1
