|
|
Hi Folks,
I didn't see this topic.
In the mornings, my Automatic trans in the daily driver (123,XXX mi) is not shifting out of first gear unless I drive it SLOWLY around a few side streets for a mile or so. Eventually it kicks into 2nd, and then I know I'm good to go.
I do my chores, and for the rest of the trip it starts and goes just fine. Had the filter kit (NAPA) just changed and didn't fix the problem.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Needless to say Mk1 Autos were not common and replacement parts would be hard to find.
Thank you |

Very possible it is the transmission governor sticking. Easy to get to. It is on the top of the trans. Spring wire clip holding down a round three inch cap.
Check the gears on it as they are plastic and wear. Make sure the governor pieces work freely. |

Awesome information. Thank you!
I'm not a mechanic, but I'll pass this onto the guy who is helping me.
Much appreciated, vwjunkie3 !! |

also make sure the accelerator cable is adjusted properly...they use a 2 piece cable that goes from the pedal to the trans, then a second piece that goes from the trans to the throttle body...if there's too much slack in the second piece the trans thinks you have the throttle open further than it actually is and will delay the shift points |

Thank you volksworld ! I will mention it to my mechanic. He's not a VW specialist. |
