questionable name, cant find them on wolfs drawings.

I only had 2 when taking the car apart.
I was missing the passenger side door panel but had the other 3.

so, any ideas if there should be 6 of them?

from my '55 April built, there are two per door, one for the window crank and one for the lock/unlock handle. if anyone knows, did originals come with the "back plate" as pictured here, or just the spring?

The backing plate didn’t start until late 56.

Now that I've seen them I want them on my 54.

If I had of known about them I would have at least covered the large end that contacts my new door upholstery with duct tape to protect the material. I did feel that the end of the spring was potentially a hole poker.

Next time the door cards are off I will be adding some protection.

They go against the door, not against the door card. Wouldn’t help with not poking holes in the door cards. It’s purpose is to make it easier to center the springs and install the door cards.

Picture from my 57 door. This door had never been apart.

It looks like someone made those. They are not factory as far as I can tell. I have pulled apart original early doors and never seen anything like that. Usually they would glue a piece of material against the door to lay the spring on. Likely all you are trying to do is stop the metal on metal.

I can't say for sure on early cars, but on later cars the you're way better off putting the spring he other way. The small diameter end of the spring can poke through the door panel/ handle hole if they're assembled that way.
I've disassembled dozens of cars, and don't think I've ever come across those backing plates on anything. Just took a 63' Apart last night- 100% guarantee it had never been apart, no backing plates.

My 1956 convertible (built on August 9 1955) has them.
I have them in a zip lock bag somewhere in my shed.

This is most likely original.

I have 9 pieces with a hole and 1 without a hole. I recall the holed papers were stacked together.

NOPE (The paper without the hole was up against the door panel.)

Sorry, my dog was typing...

Howdy,

Door panel being the door or the door card?

Mark.
