I put the old wheels on for winter storage. I had the good ones powder coated and new tires, I put almost 100,000 km on the last set. I'll be putting the good wheels on in a couple weeks or so.

The one tire was quite worn as my alignment was out for a while. (I've since had that fxed).

Tires tread on a bug, just don't wear out. At 95000km, I changed the two front tire, because they were loosing air, not because the tread was worn out. Come to find out the tires were rotting. Those were the original tires, from 2002. So I had been storing the other Two tires, so I put those on. They had been stored four about 4 yrs. They lasted two months, they starting air out the side walls. All four tires still had 1/3 of the tread left. I run a longer tire in the rear. I have never had the 2002 Bug aligned. The Bug spent most of its life in Calif. Where the road are much better. Here in Virginia the roads are bad, so that might change.

Antares rims, they were available on the special edition Mexican Beetles (like the Jeans Beetle). These are off a Jeans Edition, this is the car they came off of (car is located in Japan):

@radstude

Little over 200 miles on rings and believe they are well seated/broken in. The 1679i continues to start and run perfectly with no modifications. There is certainly more HP and TQ. Don't know what it would be based off a stock 1600i engine.

I'm sure I'm leaving a lot of power on the table using the stock cam and ECU chip. Looking to source one of Manfred's 1603 chips now.

Future engine build for me would probably be:

Cam - Hydro lifter and FI compatable
CW crank
Maybe up to 1776cc

Might build that engine in a year or so. Right now, super happy with the 88's, well worth the money and ease to install.

I have three Mexican Beetles with the 1600i engine and the typical A/C system added. All three have this same problem:

Everything works fine with the engine and A/C, UNTIL the head pressure
in the A/C system starts to build increased head pressure. The A/C blows
cold but when the throttle is snapped shut (like at a stop sign), the RPM's
decrease very quickly and the engine will stall.

I can prevent this by feathering the accelerator for just a second and the engine idles fine even with the A/C compressor on and the engine hot.

I have a couple of thoughts about a fix, such as:
1. Change the condenser to a Gilmore style to reduce temp build up in the A/C system.

2. Maybe try an Achiever or Equalizer type of pulley (if an A/C pulley could be added) to slow down the deceleration to idle.

I am hoping someone here has had this problem and a fix. I have done an extensive search to get help on this and have not seen problems with any make that has this same problem.

I have VAG-COM and it doesn't throw any codes.

Thanks,
Scott

When the compressor shuts off, is the throttle return to normal mechanical or is it a air bypass?

Thinking if it's mechanical, some old carbs on Porsches had vaccuum pots when the throttle snapped back to idle, it had to squish the vac pot as it returned to idle position. Sort of a slowly back to idle.

I should have mentioned that my Beetles have the Digifant FI system.

The engine will handle the quick snap back of the accelerator fine with the
air conditioner off. It will idle fine. Which it also does with the A/C on but just
not when you "jump off" the gas! It only does the quick idle stall with the A/C on AND when the compressor has been running for 20 minutes or so.

It sort of appears that the 1600i"s computer doesn't account for the extra load
that the A/C causes for the snap back portion of the idle....or....
The design of the mexican 'add on' A/C is a poor design with the condensor
located in position that doesn't allow enough air flow through it to keep it
cool enough to not increase the pressure against the compressor.

I am looking for a new dash vent for the air conditioning. I already tried with Antonio, and he no longer has them in stock. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oil Question

Hi Sambas,

I have a 1965 1200 with a rebuilt engine. The rebuilder was very specific on what oil to use because it was an old engine with 'flat tappets' and his preferred oil has a high zinc content. Fine - will do what he said!

Now my 1997 Mexican 1600i is a lot newer and built at a time when unleaded fuel was here to stay. Does it have flat tappets too? Do I need a high zinc oil or will oils for more modern cars be more suitable?

much thanks!

Hi I've been using Mobil 0w40 Synthetic for 12 years now on my '96, I've driven 120,000 km without any problems (196,000 on the car now). I change the oil and filter every 5000 km.

I've been using the Castrol Edge Euro 5-40W and like it. Seems to work well with the hydro lifters.

After 19 years, adding gauges to the Bug.

Tach, CHT, Oil PSIG and Oil temp.

Was able to source some NOS Marine VDO gauges. I like those as the font and white needle matches the stock Speedo pretty close. Was also able to run wires through the factory grommets and even used a connector in the engine bay. Can just unplug and pull the engine like the factory harness.

Pic shows only two of the gauges installed. Was testing the Tach.

Look-in good! What connection point did you use for the tach, in the engine bay?
